  • The Ajuga genus includes about 40 species of herbaceous plants in the mint family (Lamiaceae). They are commonly known as Bugleweed. Most have a low-growing, creeping form and are used as ground covers, produce blue flowers in a long lasting cycle begining in early spring. Ajuga x tenorii Chocolate Chip is a hybrid developed in Italy that has smaller, bronze-blushed leaves and a tighter and more compact habit than the more common Ajuga reptans. It is also known as Valfredda.
  • Overall, it grows lower, slower, and denser, maturing at about 4 inches tall, and is better-behaved, more disease-resistant, and cold-tolerant than other types. The bright blue spikes of springtime flowers are a treat, but the colored foliage adds year-round texture and interest. It can be used as an easy-care ground cover, in place of grass in shaded areas, as edging or filler for rock gardens or paths, incorporated into mixed perennial beds, garden pots, planters, or baskets.
  • Care: Plant in fertile, well-draining soil or potting media. Locate in full to partial afternoon shade. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture until well-established. Feed a good quality, slow-release, general-purpose fertilizer with the initial planting and annually in spring thereafter. Monitor for browning or spotting during wet, humid weather and treat as necessary.
  • Indoor Growing: While the Ajuga plant will grow indoors fairly easily, it require the full spectrum of indirect light for 2 to 4 hours daily to retain leaf color and a period of chilling during winter produce flowers. It is cold hardy so indoor overwinter is not necessary.
  • Climate: Cold Tolerant. USDA Recommended Zone Range 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. Ajuga thrive across a wide range of climates. Its adaptation to cold ranges from full dormancy where it freezes down to the ground and resprouts to a resting phase where growth stops, but foliage remains green.
